Chris Ulrich ’87 passed away on Monday, January 14, 2013 while working on his motorcycle, nine months after he was inducted into the Brother Rice Circle of Champions Athletic Hall of Fame. Chris was deeply loved by family and friends and will be long remembered as one of the best athletes/swimmers in Brother Rice history. Chris, a two-sport standout in swimming and water polo, participated in both for all four years. He earned an amazing four major letters in each sport during his Crusader athletic career. As a member of the water polo team, Chris and his team won the state title during his junior year and took third in his senior campaign. Chris had a stellar career as a member of the swim team. In his junior year, Chris took fourth in state in the 100 yard butterfly. His senior year culminated with Chris’s being the Illinois State Champion in the 100 yard butterfly and fifth place in the 50 yard freestyle, earning him the Lawless Award. Chris made an appearance at the 1988 Olympic Trials in Indianapolis, Indiana in the 100 meter butterfly. Chris continued his swimming career at Iowa State on scholarship, where he captured the Big Eight’s 100 meter butterfly title. Chris competed at the NCAA Division I Championships as a member of the 400 freestyle relay team for the Cyclones. Chris left Iowa State and continued his swimming career at Southwest Missouri State University. As a Bear, Chris set school records in the 100 meter butterfly, the 100 meter freestyle, and the 50 meter freestyle. As a junior at SMSU, Chris captured top honors in the 100 butterfly at the Midwest Regional Championships and placed second in the 200 IM and regional championships. Ulrich finished in third at the Midwest Regional in total points scored for an individual. Chris finished as a Big 8 Champion and an NCAA qualifier.
